Who would have thought a trip to Tesco would be so exciting? The children were so looking forward to going and thoroughly enjoyed the session.
Firstly we settled into a classroom and each child was given a piece of dough to sculpt into their very own creation. We had ladybirds, snails, plaits, old men with walking sticks, the list was endless! The dough was then taken to the bakery where it was baked ready for to take back to school. We then completed some activities on the shop floor. We made a tally chart to show the different coloured fruit and vegetables that we found, we met the fishmonger and talked about different types of fish and also listened whilst the baker told us about baking bread and pancakes. The children were very attentive, we were so proud of them The staff only areas of the supermarket were very interesting. This included the warehouse, freezer, loading bay and staff room. The children explored these areas with great interest. Before leaving we then did some taste tests of different fruit and cheeses. Then we collected our loaves. The aroma of freshly baked bread was beautiful on the way home!

The children love a non-uniform day. This was in support of 'stroke awareness day'. Our classroom looked so different without our usual blue jumpers around! Thank you to everyone for taking part.
These are the entries for our pet poster competition. The standard was very high! Every child was given a small prize for entering and an overall winner was chosen from each class. Thank you for entering children, your posters are amazing!
We gave a warm welcome to Thomas today. He is a tortoise and has only woken up from hibernation this month. Apparently the cold weather hasn't agreed with him, so he has slept for longer than usual. He was very energetic and climbed out of the tuff spot then strolled around the classroom approaching the children one by one. He ate some lettuce and the children were amazed at how wide he could open his mouth! The children asked lots of questions and discovered lots of tortoise facts.
We returned to school after Easter to a very exciting animal encounter workshop. Julia came with a wide variety of animals and told us about their natural habitats, basic needs and interesting facts.
Some children were nervous to begin with, but as you will see from the photos their confidence increased as the session progressed. We thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and it really inspired the children in their creative and writing activities. These photos are from Mrs Marshall's class, the others will be posted separately because there are so many! In the week leading up to the holidays we have read a simple version the Easter story and talked about why we have Easter. We made Easter cards for our families and also treated ourselves with some food preparation. We made our own Easter nests and all agreed that food tastes much nicer when we have made it ourselves!
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who collected petals for our special activity. We were thrilled with the response and it has been such a popular area. It was so interesting to watch the children carefully selecting their petals and the equipment they wanted to use. You can see the high levels of concentration on their faces as they experimented. We will definitely repeat this activity, but we will let you know in advance so that you can start collecting again!
The whole of Foundation Stage took part in our 'eco brick' project. We had to collect non-recyclable materials like cling film, plastic packaging, straws and 2 litre plastic bottles. We had to clean and dry the bottles ready to fill them with the plastic. The plastic had to be packed in tightly so that the bottle was really solid. We chose to make our eco bricks into a chair. This was a long project for us and the children were so proud when it was completed!
Both classes have now finally been on this trip, Mrs Banks class had to be postponed due to gale force winds but luckily this week the weather was much kinder to us! On the visit we discovered lots of information about different trees and how they grow. This was linked to the seasons of the year and the children gained a sense of the time it takes to grow a tree. The saplings that Mrs Branigan showed us were 2 years old and were a similar height to the beanstalks that we planted 4 weeks ago! We collected natural objects that we found in the woods and identified what they were, then thought about how they felt - rough, smooth, soft, hard, cold etc. We did a Gruffalo hunt in the woods and found what the children thought was a Gruffalo scratch on a tree trunk. Mrs Branigan gave everyone a 'pebble person' and the children made a special den for it to 'live' in. The children were so particular about the dens, even making beds and pillows in some of them!
