This week in Science we have been finding out about light. We used our torches to check whether items around the class room were Opaque, Transparent or Translucent.

Welcome to Year 3! We have had a lovely week settling in and getting used to climbing those stairs to KS2. Already we are learning about the inventions the Stone Age made for us and how they helped us as part of our new topic ' People who help us'.
Thank you to everyone who came to our Welcome Meeting on the 10th September it was lovely to see you all. For those of you who could not attend I hope you received your welcome packs. A few quick reminders - Year 3 have PE on Tuesday afternoon and Mr Cavanagh asks if we could have PE kits please. We also have swimming on Thursday morning. In KS2 we reward reading at home. Once you have read for 25 days we award you in assembly and celebrate your achievement. We have 315 days from when we started school on 5th September 2018 to when we finish on 19th July 2019 which includes weekends and holidays so that 300 reads medal is well within our reach. So please keep reading! We also have Class Dojo this year as a reward system and as a way that us teachers can keep you all up to date with what we are doing in class. Additionally we will update the Year 3 blog each week to let you know what we are doing and all the fun we are having. Please get in touch if you have any questions. Thanks Miss Williams and Mr Cavanagh Today Year 3 and 4 took part in an orienteering event run by team active at Locke Park. Although many of the children had never tried orienteering before, it was a brilliant opportunity for them to practice their map reading skills and to try out a new sport. We got very soggy but the children really gave it their best effort. Well done everyone! Ancient Egypt took over Year 3 today! We dropped right into Ancient Egyptian times. A new tomb had been discovered and we spent the day gathering clues to help us investigate who the tomb belonged to. We learned that tombs like this one were only for the rich and famous and that the body within the tomb had been mummified. To help us get a clearer idea we even mummified Miss Pinches, removing her organs and placing them in the canopic jars. Then we had a go at wrapping each other up like mummies. We also had to crack the hieroglyphic code to discover more about whose tomb it was. This message reads "Lies here the body of a boy king". To properly honour this important leader we created chants and rhythms to include in a burial ceremony. At the end of the day we discovered a cartouche which held the name of the owner of the tomb. Can you guess whose tomb it was? No teachers were harmed in the learning that took place today!
In Georgraphy we have been learning about how Volcanoes are formed and the process they go through before they erupt. As part of our art this half term we worked on sculpture to create a mold for our volcanoes using scrunched up newspaper built around a milk bottle. We then covered our sculpture bases in modrock to create a firmer, watertight layer. It was a very messy job but we were all very proud of our creations. Once we had created our volcanoes we painted them, paying close attention to the textures and colours that we were using to create a realistic volcanoe.
Finally, to replicate the pressure that builds up inside a volcano and the eruption we used vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and of course food colouring to make our eruptions more realistic! In science we have started a new topic on light and dark. This got us thinking about different sounds that we can make in our music lessons, specifically the different types of sounds we can make from different instruments. We had a go at creating our own sound scapes using different instruments to create 'light' and 'dark' sounds. Here is a sample of some of the work we have done so far: Watch this space to see us produce a piece of performance poetry paired with our light and dark sound scapes!
Today Year three were very lucky to go on an intriguing and exciting trip to Creswell Crags in Worksop. We got to go in a real limestone cave (which we have learned in our science topic is a sedimentary rock!) that real Neanderthals used and lived in during the stone age. The children were very excited to see some real flint tools that would have been used for hunting although none of them were keen to trial living in a cave for a day or two! Our lovely guides also took us to the back of the cave where they showed us some examples of the kinds of skeletons that were found in the back of the cave when it was first excavated. The children were very surprised to find out that cave hyena would have lived in Creswell Crags, we were even shown some hyena 'coprolite' (fossilised poo or poo stone) that was found in he caves. As well as going in the cave we got to practice some traditional survival skills to give us a further insight into the lives of stone age men. Do you like our bender huts?
Today was the Year 3 Assembly and we took our audiences on a Stone Age journey. The children did a fantastic job sharing some of their fabulous work from this Term. We shared some of our exciting stories entitled 'The ground gave way' and even gave instructions on how to wash a Wolly Mammoth! Some of our favourite facts were also shared. The other children in school were very impressed with our toilet roll timelines which stretched all theway around the school hall. We have been learning all about the process of making soil this week in science and writing an explanation text in Literacy to share all of our learning. We even have actions to help us remember the features of the four processes involved in making soil (Additions, Losses, Translocations and Transformations). Today in science we were investigating the job of worms as translocators in soil by making our own compost bins. We will be checking in on our compost bins to see how they are doing and have even written some instructions on how to make your own . We have had a fabulous day today in year 3 celebrating a belated World Book Day. Everyone dressed to impress and we had some fabulous costumes - Well Done Everyone! As part of our celebration of reading we spent some time reading with other children across school. 3IP got to read with 6SH and 3DW read with 1SO. We really enjoyed sharing our favourite books together. We LOVE reading!!
