On Monday 5th November, Year 5 invited parents in for our first family fun session of the academic year. We decided to look at Armistice Day (as it is the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War 1 this year). We took inspiration from the hidden rock phenomena and make our own with poppies on them. Our plan is to hide these rocks round school for the other children to find.

On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 went to Cannon Hall to take part in Team Activ's cross country competition. The children represented our school fantastically and we had some good successes (coming in second in the girl's race and first in the boy's). Because of their success, some have progressed to the next part in the competition.
As part of our Harvest Festival, Year 5 decided we wanted to give back to our local community. We asked for donations of tinned food to take to the local food bank. We were overwhelmed at how generous everybody at High View was and managed to take the food bank 9 boxes worth of goods.
In Computing this term , Y5 are learning how to create stop motion animations. So far, they have watched a selection of animations using different media and evaluated their success. Next they explored the "I Can Animate" app, testing how the number of photographs and the size of the object's movement affects the speed of the film. They are getting very excited about designing their own later in the term!
As part of our literacy topic, we were inspired to write about Eden Camp. We chose to write reports about our trip, to help inform and entice people others to want to visit. We focussed on using formal language in our writing, so that anybody could read our writing. Below are some examples, please feel free to comment on them!
This week, as part of our World War 2 topic, Year 5 looked at which countries made up the allies and which made up the axis. We found it very interesting and it also made us ask questions about other countries and what part they played during World War 2. On Wednesday 12th September, Year 5 visited Eden Camp near Pickering, North Yorkshire. During this exciting trip, we explored the huts , which were filled with many interesting facts and experiences about World War Two. Although we found a few of the huts a little bit scary (especially the one that reenacted what it was like during the Blitz) , we thoroughly enjoyed our day. We have been inspired to use this amazing experience to write reports about this wonderful place. Come back soon to see what we produce! Hello and welcome to our brand new Year 5 academic year with our brand new Year 5s! We cannot wait to get started on our new curriculum (designed on feedback from the children at High View). Our first topic is 'Keep The Home Fires Burning' , which is all about Britain at war. Please keep an eye on our blog for all the exciting activities and learning we do as part of this topic!
Today, we celebrated World Book Day.
In Year 5, we spent the day celebrating our love of reading. We read our favourite books, we played games such as 'Who Am I?' where we were given a secret book character name and we had to guess who we were by asking questions and we also did some paired reading with the younger children in Year 2! At the end of the day, our parents and carers were invited in to read with us. We had great fun! We know, in Year 5, reading is an important part of our learning. Here are 5 reasons why reading is so important: Reading helps your imagination Reading helps your concentation and focus Reading improves your memory Reading helps with communication Reading improves writing skills Today, we had a spectacular experience. We had a visit from a planetarium which allowed us to 'travel into outer space' and learn more all about our Solar System and beyond!
We learned about all of the planets in our Solar System, the first moon landing and what it takes to be an astronaut. We also looked into whether alien life is really out there or not! We all thoroughly enjoyed our experience in the planetarium and would like to thank Matt and Wonder Dome Planetarium for coming into school and giving us the opportunity to widen our knowledge on Earth and Space. |
