As part of our emergency services topic we arranged a visit from the local police. PC Malc and PC Tony talked to us about their job, uniforms and equipment. The children were so enthusiastic, we could have kept them here all day asking questions!

The children were so excited when they arrived at school, all prepared with their wellies and packed lunches. The day went so quickly and smoothly. Mrs Brannigan, the leader from the Royal Forestry Society commented on how interested and well behaved the children were. Here are a few photos to show some of the activities we took part in.
We were very lucky with the weather on the trip days, it was so lovely to be outside! It was muddy in places but the children saw that as a bonus! We spent most of our time outside, walking through the woods, collecting natural objects, singing songs and then making dens for our special pebble people. The children were fantastic, they were a credit to our school.
The children were busy outside when we spotted a frog near the see-saw! We quickly moved the seesaw to protect him, then watched him jumping around. When it was time to go indoors the children were concerned that he might get injured if we left him, so we gently caught him in a box and took him to the pond. Later that day we visited the pond to see if we could find him. He was nowhere to be found but we did spot lots of frogspawn. We will keep visiting the pond and see if we can spot any more frogs. It was a total change to our plan for the day but very exciting!
In preparation for this activity we froze some pots of water with little monsters inside. To begin we wrapped one of the ice blocks in tinfoil and passed it around for the children to feel. The words they used to describe it were very descriptive - cold, slippery, damp, freezing, crumpled, heavy, drippy, wet. This was before we even unwrapped it!
These were the questions we investigated. Where do you think this water is coming from? Why are your hands cold and wet? What will make the ice melt? Would anything make the ice melt faster? How can we get the monster out of the ice? The photos show the children using their senses to explore the ice. It was such a popular activity, the concentration shown by the children was amazing. As part of our science week we thought about the creatures who live underwater. We started by reading 'Mister seahorse' by Eric Carle, then made our very own 'ocean in a bottle'. We made a habitat for the creatures in the book. We investigated what happens when we mix water and oil and made waves for Mr Seahorse to tumble and turn inside the bottle.
In our playground we have a 'minibeast hotel'. We talked about what we could do to encourage the minibeasts to live in it! We made a list of all the things we thought they would like, then collected them from around our school grounds. We will be checking regularly and promise to take care of them when they do move in. We are very gentle.
The children had a new job today, they were all chefs! They were all dressed suitably with an apron and chef's hat. The children were very serious and took great care when designing their own pizza. Some used all the ingredients, some were more particular and used only their favourite foods. They were all in agreement about one thing - their pizzas were delicious, even better because they had made them themselves!
This was a very important day for our children, they were so looking forward to dressing up as a book character. Throughout the day we read 'favourite books' and also read with the children in Year 4. We have made some new friends!
This week we have been learning about celebrations in China for the New Year. We have read the story of 'The Great Race' and enjoyed finding out about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. To finish off our week we had noodles with prawn crackers and performed our very own dragon parade.
